Parliamentarian Alaya McKinney is a student at College of the Canyons. Although she is only seventeen years old, she is wise beyond her years.
With hard work and motivation, she attended high school during the day and took classes at night. She graduated high school at the end of her sophmore year at the age of fifthteen.
"As a young leader, I take pride in my community and I enjoy participating in outreach to other students and community leaders.
"Being involved in your community gives you so many opportunities and allows you to be apart of your surroundings," said McKinney. "This is one reasons I joined the Black Caucus."
"This organization gives me the opportunity to interact with other African American students that are just like me, going through the same struggles that I am," said McKinney. "Yet we are "fighting to make a difference."
She is also the Executive Officer of Marketing and Information for the Associated Student Government of College of the Canyons. She graduatesthis spring with an Associates Degree in Communications and Journalism. She plans to attend Howard University, and one day, a News Anchor.
"All my life I've wanted to make a difference in the world," she added.
