President Marlene C. Hurd is attending Mills College studying public administration. She is also in the cooperation education program at Laney College.
Hurd served two one-year terms as Student Trustee on the Board of Trustees for the Peralta Community College District from June 2006-2008. During her second term she was elected as the statewide President of the Black Caucus. Hurd was re-elected in 2008. She is Editor-in Chief of the Harambee Newspaper and previously a staff writer for the Laney Tower newspaper.
In November, she was appointed by Oakland CA. Mayor Ron V. Dellums as an Oakland Housing Authority Commissioner.
Hurd has previously served as Associated Students of Laney College Secretary and Senator. In 2006 she founded the Peralta Community Colleges Alumni Association.
In addition, as a public servant in the local, county and state government she has worked continuously to support policy makers for the state of California, the City of Oakland and Alameda County.
Hurd was also a volunteer intern for Alameda County Board of Supervisor Keith Carson Fifth District. She was appointed in 2005 as volunteer Commissioner for Alameda County Consumer Affairs Commission.
In 2006 Hurd served as volunteer Co-Convener on Oakland's Mayor Elect Ron V. Dellums Community Advisory Task Force Committee. Hurd submitted policy recommendations to set up a Community Service Federal Work-Study Programs.
In 2005, Hurd worked as a volunteer intern in the office of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger under Constituent Affairs Education, and in the Legislative office where she prepared bill summary analysis for the Governor's signature and worked in the States mailroom.
"I'm encouraging students to believe in themselves and follow their dreams," said Hurd. "Your goal is life is to be somebody great!"
